Lucky Bay, situated on the pristine south coast of Western Australia within Cape Le Grand National Park, is celebrated for its breathtaking scenery and serene environment. In 2017, Lucky Bay gained international attention when it was scientifically tested and recognized as having the whitest sand in Australia, and possibly the world. This assessment dethroned Hyams Beach in New South Wales, which had previously been famous for its bright sands. According to soil science consultant Noel Schoknecht, the testing involved collecting sand samples from the top 10 centimeters of the active zone between the waterline and the sand dunes. His analysis revealed that Lucky Bay’s sand is composed predominantly of fine, milky quartz grains with minimal contamination from other minerals, which gives it a luminous, frosted appearance.
Lucky Bay ranked above other notable beaches such as Hellfire Bay and Tallebudgera Creek Beach in Queensland, with Hyams Beach in fifth place. Its unique combination of clarity, softness, and purity of sand not only attracts tourists but also serves as a natural example of coastal geomorphology and mineral composition.
