Its name, which translates from Spanish to “big house,” is derived from the nearby Casa Grande Ruins National Monument, a prehistoric Hohokam structure, although the monument itself is technically situated in Coolidge. The city’s origins trace back to 1879, when it was established by The Carter Family amidst Arizona’s mining boom. The growth of Casa Grande was closely tied to the expansion of the Southern Pacific Railroad, which brought both settlers and commerce to the region. In January 1880, a small settlement called Terminus, meaning “end of the line,” was formed, comprising only five households and three structures. Later that year, in September, the railroad renamed the settlement Casa Grande in honor of the nearby ancient ruins, highlighting the region’s deep historical roots.
